The U.S. Men’s stunning 2-1 lost to Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday night that knocked them out of 2018 World Cup should had meant that both head coach Bruce Arena and U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati, resign their current positions. Bruce Arena resigned as of October 13th, Gulati, during his brief press conference said that he’ll make that decision in the next coming weeks. Let’s hope he announces that he will not run for re-election for the good of American Soccer. Since 2011, under Gulati’s Presideny’s the the U.S. men’s soccer team have failed many areas to qualify for a major international championships at the U-17 level, the U-20 level and the U-23 level that didn’t qualify for the Olympics in both 2012 and 2016. Another failure under his leadership is the ongoing struggle of the lower division soccer leagues between the United Soccer League and North American Soccer League over division sanctions that has contribute to the demise of the Men’s National teams chances for the World Cup in 2018 for the first time in 1986.
If this were any other country like England, Brazil or Argentina Mr. Gulati and many of the U.S. Soccer Federation staff would have been ran out of their positions immediately the moment the referee blows the final whistle. You would figure that a nations of 300 million, access to sport of soccer should be easy to into like other 3rd World Nations instead the sport has been treated to only serve the well off and upper middle class income family while lower middle class who want to further their careers are ignored and are then pushed to other sports. Perfect example, New York Giants Wide Receiver Odell Beckham Jr. started playing soccer at the age of three years old all the way up to 14 years old but because is family didn’t have the money for him to play for a soccer academy, Beckham was force to give up his dream of playing soccer and instead focus his attention in play football. While soccer has gained in popularity with the growth of the game at least forty percent of teenager leave the sport between the ages of 13-18 years old and many leave because of financial issues. Soccer should be treated like basketball where they are summer leagues being played in Urban Communities instead soccer matches are played by affluent mostly White Upper Middle Class Children who’s family have the money and the means to put them into a soccer academy and have a greater chance to play for a big time soccer club overseas like Arsenal, Liverpool FC or Inter Milan from Serie A League. During his interview Sunil Gulati said that pay-to-play culture is in most countries, then likens it to paying for a piano lesson, this suggest that the man only cares about focusing on wealthy individuals rather than giving a chance to individuals who are not so well off ,which is why making U.S. will never be an elite soccer nation.
For all that Mr. Gulati has done such as helping the U.S. trying and most certain get the country to host 2026 World Cup, along with Canada and Mexico and overseeing the number of increase expansion in Major League Soccer, United Soccer League, the North America Soccer League and the 4th division National Premier Soccer League he should not run for re-election when the U.S. Soccer Federations holds it’s election in February because he is now officially a polarizing figure for failing to grow Soccer in America. Should he run and likely win re-elections he and board members of the U.S. Soccer Federation risk alienating many devoted soccer fans across America, further more he could force a rogue new soccer Federation within the American Soccer System. So Mr. Gulati for the good of the growth of American soccer please let somebody else run for the U.S. Soccer Federation and give them new direction.
