The 2019 NFL training camp has open and already there some surprising names that were either cut, waved, not drafted or have not signed with any team but could be playing in the XFL when the League start in February 2020. For an example: Mason Foster who started 16 games with the Washington Redskins during 2018 season, and played nine season was cut just before training camp. Foster is not the only big name Linebacker in NFL that is out of a job, players like Nick Perry, Sam Acho, Connor Barwin, and Manti Te’o are big name Linebackers that are not on the roster at this moment. Te’o is perhaps the most intriguing because he’s finished second in the Heisman Trophy running behind Johnny Manziel in 2013 and had a promising start in his career when he was drafted in the second round by the Chargers, but was plagued by injuries during his time. He played 2 seasons with the New Orleans Saints but has yet to be signed by any NFL team at this moment which he could look to the XFL to restart his football career. Robert Nkemdiche was once a promising Defensive Lineman out of the University of Mississippi but as become a bust and was just release by the Arizona Cardinals at the start of training camp.
In the Defensive secondary names like Sam Shields, Eric Berry, Mike Mitchell, Shareece Wright and Morris Claiborne. Eric Berry is a former 5 time All-Pro Defensive back for the Kansas City Chiefs but is coming off a 2 year injury plague season he also suffered a life threatening Hodgkin’s lymphoma that also signed line him. While and NFL team might take a change in signing him sometime this season it wouldn’t be a shock if he were to give the XFL a shot if no team takes also Morris Claiborne who started 15 games with the Jets could also see himself playing the XFL.
On the offensive side of the ball there are some very valuable players that could make an impact in the XFL at Quarterback like Brock Osweiler, Matt Casel, Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett. Jones and Barrett are former Ohio State Quarterbacks who had good solid careers in college that lead their team to the National Title but have never gotten the opportunity to start or play in the regular season in the NFL. In the Running back position players like Jay Ajayi, Jeremy Hill, L.J. Scott and Chris Ivory are players that are available. Jay Ajayi is a former 1,000 rushing and played a key role in helping the Philadelphia Eagle in winning their first Super Bowl during the 2017 season. In the Wide Receiver and Tight End position, Michael Crabtree, Terrence Williams, Kelvin Benjamin, Mike Wallace, Pierre Garcon, Dez Bryant Jermaine Gresham and Neal Sterling are players that will be looked upon by Coaches and General Managers in the XFL. As the NFL preseason training camp roles on and comes to an end on the first week of September, when teams must cut the roster to 53 players; the list promises to see some high profile players that could see action in the XFL once the season begins in February 2020. Stay tune!!!
